There are a lot of information about bio-wheels and their importance in biological filtration in aquariums. In theory, they are great idea and I bought into this idea for years without seeing the test results if the hype was true. In theory, the wheel spins in the air, where oxygen on aerobic bacteria need to remove the ammonia and nitrite is much more common. But after much stalling of a wheel with which I have waited many aquariums customers, I decided to start testing these wheels than other organicFiltering methods.
I removed the Bio-Rad in the aquarium filter penguin on a comparable with similar loads and organic fish and found no discernable ammonia spike. Yet, when they were executed HOB sponge pre-filter attached to their host, has removed the filters, was evident peaks of ammonia. This does not mean no work at all is a Bio-Rad, especially, there are fewer deposits to build on the fiber Bio-Rad.
What is most important is to have enough dissolvedOxygen by stirring the water surface, the Aquarium, where they replaced the oxygen and other gases and the atmosphere. This is also important for the aquarium ORP not only aerobic bacteria. I have found to keep bacteria porous filter media sponge best water supplied with oxygen.
Here are some reasons for bad results of bio-wheels:
[1] accumulation of hard water, but not so much a problem in freshwater aquariums, this is a greatProblem with hard water, and especially marine aquarium aquarium (where the bio wheels are a total waste of money). What is happening is the calcium salts and other contaminants are formed in the pores of the fiber of Bio-Rad, do not allow the bacteria are there. This is the main reason for the lack of efficacy for the bio-wheels. My experiments in aquaria Discus (ie fresh water) showed better results for the bio-wheels (although not as good as a sponge or other porous media).
[2] The lack of space;a Bio-Rad does not use the entire surface, many other products based on an organic sponge media to the very porous pumice Eheim media and others.
[3] Bio-Rad stands; bio wheels have a bad habit of hesitation. This is just a small reason to not have this bio-wheels, as this is a correctable problem.
Here's one way to solve this problem is (and this will be an ongoing maintenance problem). Make sure that the Teflon ends bio wheel spindle are clean and have no accumulation of calcium canReplace them with Teflon tape in a pinch. Also, make sure the assembly Bio-Rad is not too tight, simply remove the Bio-Rad and gently spread apart the assembly, the wheel can rotate more freely.
